Walnut – English
Elegant, refined, and unmistakably classic, English Walnut has long been one of the world’s most prized furniture timbers. Despite the name, the species is actually native to parts of Europe and Central Asia, and is also commonly referred to as European Walnut or Persian Walnut.
The heartwood ranges from warm honey brown through rich chocolate tones, often carrying subtle grey, olive, or purplish undertones. Grain is typically straight, though figured boards with curl, crotch, or burl figure can be spectacular. Compared to American Black Walnut, English Walnut generally has a lighter, warmer appearance with a slightly more refined texture and softer contrast between heartwood and sapwood.
English Walnut machines beautifully and has long been favored for fine cabinetry, gunstocks, heirloom furniture, paneling, carving, and luxury interiors. It turns well, finishes exceptionally smoothly, and develops a deep natural luster with oil finishes.
While not as hard as many tropical hardwoods, it offers an excellent balance of stability, workability, and durability, making it a favorite among craftsmen who value elegance over brute hardness.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
