Lignum Vitae – Argentine

Argentine Lignum Vitae (Bulnesia sarmientoi) is one of the hardest, densest woods in the world, and very similar to genuine Lignum Vitae in appearance, working properties and physical characteristics. The two are in the same plant family. The closely related Verawood (Bulnesia arborea) is often sold alongside it.
The heartwood ranges from medium to dark brown, often with green highlights that become more pronounced with age and light exposure. The sapwood is pale yellow. The grain can be straight, wavy or slightly interlocked, with a smooth, consistent texture and a fine luster after sanding. Its natural oils give it a waxy feel and a faint, pleasant scent.
It’s rough on blades and can be hard to glue, but it turns very smoothly and is extremely stable. The oils make it naturally self-lubricating, which is why its relative was once used for ship bearings.
It’s virtually rot- and insect-proof, which makes it ideal for demanding uses such as tool handles, mallets, turnings, boatbuilding and outdoor work. Its essential oil, known as guaiac wood oil, is also used in perfumery.
Bulnesia sarmientoi is listed in CITES Appendix II, so international shipments need CITES permits. Verawood (Bulnesia arborea) is not listed.
