Rosewood – Amazon

Amazon Rosewood (Dalbergia spruceana) is a true rosewood from the Brazilian Amazon. It has long been considered a good substitute for Brazilian Rosewood, but its looks and tone are good enough to stand on their own.
It tends toward a darker reddish-brown than Brazilian Rosewood, often with darker streaks and occasional figure. It’s noticeably heavier too: Amazon Rosewood will usually sink in water, while dry Brazilian Rosewood should float.
Its density makes it challenging to work, and its oils can make gluing tricky, so wipe joints with a solvent first. It rewards the effort with a fine, lustrous polish. Like other true rosewoods, it’s very durable and stable once dry, and it has the classic rosewood scent when cut.
Amazon Rosewood is valued by guitar makers for backs, sides and fretboards, where it gives a rich, complex tone. It’s also used for fine furniture, inlay, turnings, knife handles and veneer. See also East Indian Rosewood.
Listed in CITES Appendix II, like all Dalbergia species, so international shipments of the wood need CITES permits. Finished musical instruments are generally exempt.
