Maple – Hard

Hard Maple (Acer saccharum), also called Sugar or Rock Maple, is a pillar of American woodworking, and it’s the tree tapped for maple syrup. It grows across the northeastern US and Canada, including here in Maine. Unusually, it’s harvested mainly for its pale sapwood rather than its heartwood.
It’s pale white to pale yellow, sometimes with light reddish or pinkish tints, and has a lovely luster. The grain is usually straight, sometimes wavy, with a fine, even texture. It’s the strongest and densest of the commercial maples, yet easy to work, and it can show birdseye and curly figure.
Take it slowly with high-speed tools, as maple can burn, and use sharp blades. It glues well and finishes beautifully, though it can blotch with stain, so many people prefer a clear finish.
For more than a century, Hard Maple has been the preferred wood for gym floors, bowling alleys and dance floors, and it’s been central to electric guitar making since the 1950s. It’s used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, cutting boards and butcher blocks, carving and turnings, and premium boards are always in demand.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
