Species: Jatoba
Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril) is widely known as Brazilian Cherry, a name flooring makers gave it because its color resembles aged cherry. It grows across Central and South America and the Caribbean. It's salmon red to medium or dark reddish-brown, often with darker streaks, and the color deepens noticeably with light exposure. The grain is mostly interlocked with a medium to coarse texture and a good natural luster. It's strong, hard, durable and resistant to rot and insects. Its density and interlocked grain can make it hard to work and tough on blades, but it's an excellent turning wood, and it stains, glues and finishes well. Despite its density, it also steam-bends well.Jatoba is a great choice when you need strength and durability at a moderate price. It's one of the most popular woods for hardwood flooring, and it's also used for furniture, cabinetry, stair treads, tool handles and turnings. It's growing in popularity with guitar makers too, for its bright, well-rounded tone.
