Gabon Ebony is one of the most iconic and coveted exotic hardwoods in the world. Known for its dark, dramatic heartwood—ranging from pure black to variegated tones with greys, browns, and even golden streaks—it remains a favorite for fine woodworking despite its evolving appearance. The species grows slowly and typically yields small-diameter logs, making long, clear boards both rare and expensive.Exceptionally dense, strong, and naturally oily, Gabon Ebony takes an extraordinary polish and reveals a stunning natural luster when sanded. That same oiliness can make gluing more difficult, but the aesthetic payoff is often worth the extra care.Its fine texture and neutral-to-dark coloration have made it a longstanding favorite of woodturners, carvers, and luthiers. It is best known as the traditional fingerboard wood for orchestral string instruments—violins, violas, cellos, and basses—where its density and visual presence are unmatched. That said, African Blackwood has largely overtaken it as the most consistently black tonewood.In recent years, both the quality and availability of Gabon Ebony in U.S. markets have declined sharply. As demand remains high, prices have continued to rise across both wholesale and retail channels.
