Minor skip plane. Minor spalted. Bug holes on edge.
Species: Chechen
Chechen (Metopium brownei), also called Caribbean Rosewood, grows in southern Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It isn't a true rosewood, but it shares many of the same qualities. It's durable, easy to work and finish, and moderately priced for an exotic. It can be stunning, with green, red, orange and gold hues and brown and black lines over a medium-brown base, and figure ranging from subtle to dramatic. Color, weight and density vary a lot depending on where the tree grew, and the colors darken and warm with age.The grain is usually straight with a fine to medium texture, and it machines, turns and finishes well to a rich luster. Its nickname, “Black Poisonwood,” comes from the tree's sap and bark, which can irritate skin much like poison ivy. Processed lumber is far less of a concern, though as with any exotic, wear a dust mask and gloves if you're sensitive.Chechen is popular with furniture makers, veneer producers and guitar builders, who value its tone, and it's also used for flooring, cabinetry and turnings.
