Avodire

Avodire (Turraeanthus africanus) is a West African wood from the mahogany family. Its fine texture and impressive natural luster have earned it the name African Satinwood.
The color ranges from pale yellow to cream, turning a deeper golden yellow with exposure to light. Heartwood and sapwood can be hard to tell apart. The grain may be straight, wavy, irregular or interlocked, and figured boards with mottle, ripple and strong chatoyance are common.
It’s very stable in use and strong for its weight, and it works much like mahogany, gluing and finishing well. Highly figured pieces can be stunning.
Avodire is a favorite with veneer producers, and it’s also used for fine furniture, cabinetry and decorative work where its shimmer can show.
This species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is listed as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List.
