Species: Elm – Red
Red Elm (Ulmus rubra), also called Slippery Elm, was once one of North America's most common trees and a staple utility wood. Dutch elm disease devastated elm populations from the 1950s onward, and long boards are now hard to find. The heartwood ranges from muted tan to light and medium reddish-brown, with clearly paler sapwood. The grain is typically interlocked, giving the wood real toughness and resistance to splitting, and the texture is coarse, with an attractive figure on flat-sawn faces. It glues, stains and finishes well, and it steam-bends nicely. Resawing can be a chore, though, and tear-out is common, so sharp tools and light passes help. It isn't durable outdoors and can move with changes in humidity, so let it acclimatize before use.The species has survived thanks to its quick growth and early seeding, though few trees now reach full maturity. Red Elm is best for indoor projects such as furniture, chair seats, boxes, bentwood pieces and veneer, where its interlocked grain and warm color shine.
