Species: Cypress – Swamp
Swamp Cypress (Taxodium distichum), also called Bald Cypress, is the state tree of Louisiana and an important wood across the southeastern US. It grows in swamps and along rivers, and its roots often rise above the water as “knees,” which are sometimes harvested for large carvings. The wood is light, pale yellow-brown to reddish-brown, durable and tough, with plenty of character. It's usually straight-grained, with knots common, and it has a slightly greasy feel and a mild scent. Old-growth heartwood is so resistant to rot that cypress earned the nickname “the wood eternal.”Apart from the knots, it works, glues and finishes without trouble, and it's a moderately priced utility wood. Today's second-growth timber is less durable than the old-growth logs of the past, but it's still a reliable choice for damp conditions.Swamp Cypress is used for boatbuilding, siding, trim, outdoor furniture, construction and veneer. “Pecky Cypress,” wood naturally marked with pockets by a fungus, is popular as decorative interior paneling along the southeastern coast.
