Goncalo Alves (Astronium spp.), often called Tigerwood, is a South American hardwood prized for its vibrant orange-brown color and bold dark stripes. It grows from Mexico to Brazil, and the name covers a couple of closely related species.The heartwood is reddish to golden brown with irregular dark brown to black streaks, and it darkens to a richer brown over time. It's strong and durable, able to stand up to plenty of wear. The grain can be straight, wavy or interlocked, with a fine texture and a natural sheen, so every piece stands out.Despite its density, it turns smoothly and finishes to an impressive shine. Its natural oils mean gluing needs a little extra care, such as wiping joints with a solvent first, and interlocked boards can tear out when planed, so take light final passes.Goncalo Alves is used for high-end furniture, cabinetry, flooring, knife handles and carving, and guitar makers increasingly value it for its tone and affordability. Many boards can be fairly plain, so we're pleased to offer especially stripy stock.
